Boat Building Plans

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

We all dream of owning a boat, but most of us just cannot afford to purchase one.  Factory built boats are very costly, and most boat dealers will charge you per foot.  Building a wooden boat is a great project to work on from your own shop or garage and will save you lots of money.  The end result is that you will have a great boat that you built with your own two hands, waiting for you to take it out on the water.

If you don’t think you would be any good at wooden boat building, you never know until you try.  There are lots of really great boat building plans available online that you can download directly onto your computer and then print out so that you can have the plans in front of you.  A good set of boat plans will come with a list of materials that are required to complete your project.  This is one of the best ways to save money, because you are able to shop around for the best deals on the materials needed to complete your project.

You might think the best way to save money with wood boat plans is to obtain free ones. While this may be true to an extent, you are actually making a big mistake that could end up costing you even more.  The reasons for this are simple.  Free plans do not come with all the resources you need to help you with your project.  You do not know who created those plans, and you most certainly do not know if the plans were even designed by someone with knowledge about boats or experience in constructing boats.

The best way to save money with wooden boat building is to do your project right the first time, with the right set of plans.  If you spend a lot of money on supplies and are using a free plan, and mess up the project due to poor instructions, you will only have to start over again and do it correctly.  This will definitely not save you money, because you will have wasted all of the materials on your fudged project.

Do yourself a favor, and find a site that has all the resources you need.  So what if you have to pay a small, one time fee.  You will have access to lots of plans, so if you find that building boats is right for you, you have other plans to build.  Buying the right plans to start off with will ensure that you will be successful and that you will be able to complete your build.  The end result will be something that you are proud to own and you will want to let everyone know that you built it with your own two hands!

I always enjoy reading your posts. I own a blog too and your post are a great motivator for writing blocks.

I have just finished refurbishing an old clinker wooden row boat (which appears to have had a mast in the past). It has inspired my mate and myself to build one from scratch. So far, I have only found plywood plans. Can anyone help me with sites?
