Fiberglass Boat Building

Fiberglass is one of the most popular materials for building boats and has become more commonly used over the years, even more so than wood or metal mostly due to its diversity and ease of use. Fiberglass is strong, easy to maintain, and will not rot or be consumed by termites.
One method of fiberglass boat building is to first construct a very good mold. This should be the mirror image of the hull and is referred to as a plug, or replica of a hull. Most of these molds are made using an existing hull from a good boat with an ideal hull shape. Once you have a good solid plug or mold, you can easily reproduce many hulls. The process is quite involved and requires careful planning and a detailed set of instructions. Due to the relatively high cost of constructing molds, this method is generally only suitable for volume production.
There are other methods which make it practical to build a single boat using fiberglass materials, including fiberglass planking and sandwich core. In fiberglass planking, dry fiberglass fabric is attached to the frame, then saturated with resin. Additional layers are added to give the hull thickness as the preceding layer dries. Sandwich core, also known as foam-sandwich, is the process where PVC foam acts as a core. Fiberglass material and resin are then applied to both sides. You may also use these materials and apply them to an existing boat. If done properly, these methods produce boats that often exceed the quality of factory made boats.
Risks Associated With Fiberglass Materials
The major drawback to using fiberglass is the various health risks that are associated with inhaling the fiber dust during the construction process. Also be aware that working with these materials is very dangerous and can be a fire hazard. Mixing catalyst and accelerator together can cause an explosion. There is an exact process to mixing the materials, so you need to measure carefully.
Finding a very accurate guide that covers all of the steps and the mixing processes is one of the most important parts of building a fiberglass boat. Never attempt to build a fiberglass boat without reading all of the material first and educating yourself on the dangers.
