Do I have to go out and buy a lot of tools?

No, you don’t.  Many boats can be built with basic power tools – drill, jigsaw, and circular saw.  A table saw can also come in handy if you have one, but don’t run out and buy one.  Many DIY boat builders construct excellent wooden boats from their basic power tools.

What type of skills are required?

There are many plans that use simple methods and are designed for amateur boat building.  There are no special skills required.

What type of planning do I need to do to complete a boat building project?

Depending on the complexity of the plan, the skills required are more involved with larger projects.  Consider what type of boating you want to do with your boat.  Plans come in a wide array of techniques and materials.  You will need to have an understanding of materials and techniques required to complete your build.  You will need a large working area where you can lay out the pieces.

What should I look for in a plan?

The plans you choose should have detailed step-by-step instructions for many projects from beginner to advanced.  They should be tried and tested plans with reviews from other customers.  Also, any reputable company will offer a money back guarantee in case you are not 100% satisfied.

What is the cost of building a boat?

Since you are not having a boat built for you, you are saving money on the costs of skilled labor.  You may wish to consult with a boat builder; however, expect to pay for their time.  You can save a lot of money building your own boat – on labor and materials.  The entire cost depends on the plan that you choose, and it can vary, depending on where you purchase the materials required.

How Long will it take to complete my boat?

This is entirely up to you.  Are you dedicated to this project, or is it more of a hobby?  We suggest that you set up a scheduled time line for the completion of various aspects of your project to hold yourself accountable.

What type of paint should I use on my finished boat?

Epoxy resin needs to be covered with paint or varnish to provide it with protection from ultraviolet rays.  Marine enamels are recommended because they are specially formulated for exposure to water.  Depending on the material you build with, there are a variety of paints.  It is recommended that you do some research on marine paints and epoxies.
